Recovery Coaching vs. Therapy: A Comprehensive Guide
Unlike therapy, recovery coaching tends to be more present and future focused. While the past can be discussed if you desire, processing trauma does not happen in coaching sessions. The primary focus is on the present situation and how to improve for a better future.
Goals are our guide
Goal setting guides the way in coaching sessions. Together, we will collaboratively come up with small, do-able goals to help you work through recovery and get you to where you want to be. This approach aims to help individuals forge their path towards recovery in a manageable and realistic manner.
Non-pathological
Unlike therapy, coaching does not provide a diagnosis. This means we focus on treating the whole person, not just their condition. Because of this, we cannot provide disability paperwork or insurance reimbursement bills. This approach ensures that the individual feels seen and heard beyond their diagnosis.
Sessions are versatile
Coaching sessions can happen wherever you are working towards your goals. This could be in the comfort of your home or during activities like meal support, cooking, grocery shopping, or anywhere exposures take place. This flexibility makes recovery coaching highly adaptable to your day-to-day life.
Accountability
Because goals guide our sessions, there is generally more accountability in coaching sessions. Together we will make a plan for reaching your goals that is do-able and supportive to your recovery process. Research shows that social support during actionable steps in recovery strengthens one’s sense of confidence and safety throughout the process!
Recovery coaching offers a host of benefits that can help you manage and overcome your issues. Here are some of the ways recovery coaching can help:
- It helps you to challenge Eating Disorder urges, thoughts, and behaviors in the moment. It helps you resist OCD compulsions with mindfulness, attention refocusing, and non engagement techniques.
- It helps you work through body image issues and move past stuck points to get to a place of stability in recovery.
- It provides psycho-education to help you unlearn diet culture rhetoric. It helps you practice coping skills in real-time so that you’re able to build confidence in using them in your daily life.
- It utilizes creative/innovative interventions in addition to more traditional approaches. This might look like eating a challenging meal together, grocery shopping support, clothing shopping support (all virtually)!
- It can be an added support for your treatment team; may also be appropriate as a stand alone for some people.
